Seeing Richards’ name and number come up on his phone’s screen had caused Rossetti’s annoyed expression. He answered the call just before stepping out of his home.

“What’s up, Richards?”

“I’m calling to let you know that Tanner has yet to be handled.”

“And he still wants me dead?”

“Yes. He killed the three men I sent after him.”

Rossetti’s expression turned from annoyed to alarmed at those words.

Tanner saw the change in his demeanor as his finger was squeezing the trigger. Al Rossetti was obese by anyone’s definition of the word, but he had also come up on the streets of New York City. As a younger and slimmer man, he’d made a reputation for himself by working as a mob enforcer. He had survived mob wars and two other assassination attempts. His instincts were good when it came to survival. Richards’ call of warning was all he’d needed to survive a third threat on his life.

Rossetti moved faster than a man with his bulk had any right to do. He ducked down and swiveled about as Tanner’s rifle sent forth a round. The bullet took a path three inches over Rossetti’s bowed head and shattered the left collarbone of one of the goons who had been behind him. The fat man pushed past that wounded man and reentered the house.

Ramone was the first to fire at him. He did so while using the limousine for cover. His handgun barely had the range to reach Tanner, or maybe he wasn’t certain where the rifle shot had come from. Whatever the cause, Ramone’s rounds missed Tanner by a wide margin, with most of them failing to reach him.

Tanner concentrated on shooting at the men holding the rifles. Their superior weapons made them the greater threat. He killed three of them, sent several shots at the limo to keep Ramone in check, then backed away from the ridge and turned to head toward his vehicle. It was time to make a retreat. The window of opportunity he’d had was gone.
